Sydney Metro West is a $27-29 billion underground metro line linking Westmead to the Sydney CBD, targeting an opening date of 2032. Most of the major delivery packages are now let, which makes the three that are not the most commercially interesting thing about the project.
The first rail for the line was delivered to Sydney Olympic Park at the end of August 2026 — the start of trackwork under John Holland's rail systems package, and a marker that the project has moved from civil works into systems delivery.

Route and stations
Nine stations have been confirmed:
Westmead, Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays, Pyrmont, and Hunter Street in the Sydney CBD.
The line is designed to double rail capacity between Parramatta and the Sydney CBD — the corridor carrying the heaviest commuter load in the country, and the constraint the project exists to relieve.
Who is building it
| Package | Contractor | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Rail systems and track | John Holland | 60 km of track, rail systems, ventilation, fire systems, cross passages, and a stabling and maintenance facility at Clyde |
| Stations Package West | Gamuda | Design and construction of five underground stations: Westmead, North Strathfield, Burwood North, Five Dock, The Bays |
| Trains, systems, operations and maintenance | Metro Trains West Consortium — MTR Corporation-led, with CRRC | Rolling stock, systems, operations and maintenance |
| Hunter Street Station and Precinct | Metropolis Consortium — Lendlease, Mirvac, Coombes Property Group | $1.5 billion: underground station with two over-station developments, construction expected from late 2026 |
The John Holland package is worth noting for its breadth. Sixty kilometres of track on a line of this length reflects dual running tunnels plus turnbacks and stabling, and bundling ventilation, fire systems and cross passages into the same package concentrates a substantial mechanical and electrical scope with one head contractor — and, by extension, with its subcontractor chain.
What is still to be awarded
Remaining station contracts at Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park and Pyrmont are to be announced during 2026. Procurement for the integrated station developments at Sydney Olympic Park and Pyrmont is underway, with contracts expected by the end of the year.
Three consortia are shortlisted for the Pyrmont Integrated Station Development, which pairs the underground station with a 31-storey building above it:
- Gamuda Engineering, Gamuda (Australia) and Urban Property Group Australasia
- John Holland and Third.i Property
- Watpac Construction and Plenary Origination
For subcontractors and suppliers, these are the last major packages on the project. Three points worth acting on:
The successful head contractors are largely known. Gamuda holds Stations Package West; the remaining packages will go to a comparable field. Positioning with the likely bidders is more productive than waiting for award announcements.
Station fitout follows structure by years, not months. An award in 2026 does not mean fitout, vertical transport, facade or services packages are being let in 2026. The subcontract opportunities on these stations run well into the back half of the decade.
Precinct works sit outside the station packages. The Hunter Street arrangement with Lendlease, Mirvac and Coombes Property Group shows the model: station delivery and precinct development are separate commercial structures, and the precinct work carries its own pipeline of building trades.
Where it sits in the New South Wales pipeline
Sydney Metro West is the single largest item in the New South Wales public pipeline, and its scale shapes the state's numbers. New South Wales receives $14.2 billion in federal infrastructure allocations over four years — less than half the cost of this one project, which is funded principally by the state.
That concentration sustains a very large workforce and supply chain through to 2032, with a substantial share of the state's civil and rail capability committed to one client and one completion date.
What to watch
- The three remaining station awards during 2026 — Parramatta, Sydney Olympic Park, Pyrmont.
- Tunnelling and station box completion milestones, which set the timing of the fitout packages behind them.
- Rolling stock delivery under the Metro Trains West Consortium arrangement, which drives testing and commissioning dates.
- The 2032 opening, which coincides with Brisbane 2032 — two major programs drawing on the same national workforce in the same window.
