Multiplex has been appointed as the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) building partner for the $2 billion New Bankstown Hospital in Sydney's south-west, following a competitive tender process. The appointment was announced on 21 August 2026, alongside planning approval for the project's State Significant Development application.

The NSW Government describes the $2 billion commitment as the single largest capital investment in a public hospital in the state's history. Demolition and site remediation are continuing through 2026, main works construction is expected to start in 2027, and construction is expected to be completed in 2031.

What ECI means for this project

Early Contractor Involvement brings the builder into the project before the design is locked in, so construction know-how shapes the plans while they can still change easily. Under this arrangement, Multiplex will work with the project team, designers, hospital clinicians and staff to finalise the design ahead of main works construction.

Multiplex brings recent NSW hospital experience to the role. In July 2026, construction was completed on the seven-storey acute services building at the $890 million John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct in Newcastle, which Health Infrastructure delivered in partnership with Hunter New England Local Health District, Multiplex Constructions and Bureau Veritas Buildings and Infrastructure.

What will be built

The new hospital will be a 14-storey building in the Bankstown CBD, close to local services and public transport, including the future Bankstown Metro station. It will be supported by a 10-storey car park and a separate emergency drop-off area with dedicated emergency parking.

Services are expected to include (final offering to be confirmed):

  • An expanded emergency department
  • Operating theatres and an intensive care unit
  • Surgical and medical services
  • Women's and children's health services, including maternity
  • Mental health inpatient services
  • Ambulatory care, cancer services and aged care health services

Groundwork already underway

The hospital is going up on the former TAFE NSW Bankstown campus. The NSW Government invested $100 million to relocate the TAFE campus, and TAFE NSW has moved most of its training delivery to TAFE NSW Bankstown City at the Western Sydney University campus. Hindmarsh Construction Australia was engaged in February 2026, after a competitive tender, to deliver the first stage of works: demolition and site remediation. Interior strip-out of the old buildings was progressing by June, in preparation for removal of the main structures.

The project is part of the NSW Government's $3.8 billion investment over four years in new and upgraded hospitals across Western Sydney.

Also moving in NSW health

Fairfield Hospital Redevelopment. Construction started in August 2026 on a new multi-storey car park at Fairfield Hospital, marking the start of major works on the $630 million redevelopment. Hindmarsh Construction was engaged to deliver the car park after a competitive tender and planning approval. It will provide more than 450 spaces, pedestrian connections to Fairfield Hospital and the neighbouring Braeside Hospital, and rooftop solar panels, with completion expected in 2027. The wider redevelopment plans a five-storey clinical services building with an expanded emergency department, intensive care unit, medical imaging, operating theatres, inpatient wards and a new main entry.

Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital. The planning application for the new seven-storey Clinical Services Building, the main works of the $558 million Albury Wodonga Regional Hospital Project, went on public exhibition from 17 August to 14 September 2026. The project is jointly funded by the Australian, NSW and Victorian governments. The building is planned to include 110 additional overnight beds, digital operating theatres including a hybrid theatre, a new intensive care unit, a cardiac catheterisation laboratory, enhanced maternity services and a new 32-bed mental health unit. The neighbouring Northeast Building is due for completion in late 2026, and, following planning approval, the appointment of a main works contractor and the relocation of services into the Northeast Building, construction of the Clinical Services Building is expected to begin in early 2027.

What's next

At Bankstown, Multiplex and the design team will spend the coming months refining the hospital's detailed design while Hindmarsh continues clearing and remediating the site. Main works are expected to start in 2027, with construction completion expected in 2031. At Albury, feedback from the exhibition is now being reviewed ahead of a planning decision and the appointment of a main works contractor, and at Fairfield the new car park will keep rising through the rest of 2026.
