Multiplex has been appointed to deliver the new 600-bed Coomera Hospital on the northern Gold Coast. The Queensland Government announced the appointment on 9 September 2026, with the hospital to be delivered in stages from 2028, starting with a multi-storey car park and building up to all 600 beds by 2032.

The hospital will serve one of Queensland's fastest-growing communities from a site on George Alexander Way at Coomera, beside Coomera railway station. Major foundation works are already under way on site, and civil works, retaining walls and permanent stormwater tanks were expected to start from October.

What is being built

The design centres on two main buildings. A 12-storey Clinical Services Building will house the emergency department, intensive care unit, operating theatres, mental health, maternity, paediatric and renal services, along with multiple inpatient units.

Beside it, a seven-storey Ambulatory Care Building will provide outpatient clinics, day oncology, allied health, pathology and education facilities, linked to the main hospital by bridges. The campus also includes a multi-storey car park and ground-level parking.

Under the concept design announced in April 2026, Stage 1 is planned to deliver a fully operational 400-bed hospital by 2031, with structural provisions built in from the outset so the remaining 200 beds can follow in Stage 2 by 2032. The hospital is part of the Queensland Government's Hospital Rescue Plan, under which it was rescoped to add 200 beds to the earlier plan.

Multiplex's role

Health Infrastructure Queensland and Multiplex have formalised the next phase of the project through an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) Deed and a Variation Deed. Under an ECI arrangement, the builder works alongside the client and designers before main construction, helping refine the design, program and buildability of the project.

Multiplex is not new to the project. It was first engaged on the Coomera Hospital in June 2023, under the earlier 404-bed design, and now carries the rescoped 600-bed hospital forward.

The government statement says Multiplex will deliver the project, with civil works, retaining walls, permanent stormwater management tanks and works on the multi-storey car park expected to start from October 2026.

Progress on site

Major foundation works are under way, including concrete pours to support the expanded footprint, retaining works, remodelling of existing structures and bulk earthworks. Schematic Design has also been completed, a significant step that sets the layout and form of the buildings before detailed design.

Upcoming activities listed on the project page include earthworks for the first multi-storey car park and the Ambulatory Care Building, construction of the Road B retaining wall, and in-ground enabling works along George Alexander Way. Car park works were expected to start in October 2026; no public update confirming the start had been published at the time of writing.

Member for Coomera Michael Crandon said foundations were under way and "major construction activity is ramping up on site". Earlier in the year he said the build was expected to have around 1,000 workers on site when construction peaks.

Who is involved

Gold Coast Health is planning the hospital in partnership with Health Infrastructure Queensland, which holds the ECI arrangements with Multiplex. Clinicians, consumers and operational stakeholders are continuing to help shape the design.

"The Coomera Hospital will ensure we have the capacity to deliver the health services the Gold Coast needs," said Health Infrastructure Queensland Deputy Director-General Blake Lepper.

Gold Coast Health's Executive Director of Infrastructure Planning, Delivery and Commissioning, Richard Christensen, said the hospital would provide more services for the Coomera community and the northern Gold Coast corridor.

What's next

  • Expected from October 2026: Civil works, retaining walls, permanent stormwater tanks and multi-storey car park works.
  • From 2028: Staged delivery begins, starting with the car park.
  • 2031: Stage 1, a fully operational 400-bed hospital.
  • 2032: Stage 2 brings the hospital to its full 600 beds.

Project updates are published on the Hospital Rescue Plan project page and through Gold Coast Health's project newsletter.
